On Friday, May 9th, the DHS Dance Team finalized their new 2014-2015 team after a full week of evaluation, teaching, and dancing led by the senior members of last years team.
The seniors lead warm ups and stretches on the second day of tryouts, as the new girls follow their lead.
As dancers, the girls have to stretch thoroughly, paying special attention to make sure their legs are well warmed and stretched.
One of the requirements to be a dance team member is to have splits, and the seniors made sure to show all the new girls how to stretch their splits.
After stretching, the seniors lead the warmup, as they show the nominees how to do a jazz style walk across the floor.
Returners Serena Roberts and Beka Dunaway pirouette across the floor. Pirouettes are another requirement for nominees.
Incoming sophomores watch as returners show their pirouettes.
The nominees wait against the mirror for their turn to pirouette or leap across the floor.
Junior returner Noriko Smallwood practices her double pirouette.
Senior Alex Sprague demonstrates a barrel roll in front of the nominees.
Sally Lo and other nominees practice the choreographed hip-hop dance that they must perform to tryout.
Sprague teaches the jazz dance to the nominees. This dance requires the nominees to choreograph their own section.
After teaching the dance, Sprague has the nominees run through it a couple times with music.
