The Davis High women’s varsity volleyball team triumphed over Woodland Christian High School in a three set match on Sept. 11.
With Game 1 ending with a score of 25-8, Davis, Devils were confident going into the second game. However, too much confidence led to a loss of focus as the team trailed behind in the beginning of Game 2.
“It’s easy to lose focus from game to game especially when you beat a team like that in the first game,” coach Julie Crawford said.
Devils regained their composure however, and closed out Game 2 with a score of 25-19. Crawford noted that senior Maya Gilardi stepped up with crucial plays to boost the team to victory.
“She led the team with kills tonight,” Crawford said. “She was effective for us all the way around the court.”
Da Vinci senior Carolyn Brady feels that the team worked to maintain their momentum during the match.
“Collectively we just stayed positive throughout the whole game,” Brady said.
As the third game began, the Devils were slow out of the gate once again, down by a score of 11-7. Senior Irene Rutazihana believes that Davis is a much stronger team than Woodland, and Davis wasn’t playing to its full potential.
“Our weakest moments were when we played down to [Woodland],” Rutazihana said.
But by the end of the third game, the Devils had regained control and finished the game with a score of 25-22, winning the match in straight sets.
Crawford now feels eager and prepared for the rest of the season with this team.
“I think every game helps prepare us for the next and helps prepare us for the season,” Crawford said.
