OPED: Fall fashion is the best fashion

Wow, how time flies. The past few months have been sweltering to the point where leaving the comfort of the indoors just hasn’t been an option. As of Sept. 23, fall has officially commenced, and I don’t know about everyone else, but I definitely think fall fashion is the best fashion.
Not only am I thankful for a little bit of cooler weather, but I’m also starting to get really excited for all the new fall clothes popping up in stores everywhere. Every retail store is receiving massive amounts of shipments and everywhere you look, there’s black, blues, greens, and reds, and that’s definitely enough to get me pumped for the season.
Fall is all about staying bundled up and surviving the extremely cold Davis fall weather, which can get to the excruciating lows of 60 degrees. According to Keia Kodama, visual manager at Forever 21 in Davis, this means sweaters. Lots and lots of sweaters.
“Overall, [some of the latest trends are] a lot of cable knit and open knit sweaters. Oversized and flannels are also a big thing this year,” Kodama said.
Sweaters and flannels are some of the most recent trends, but this season, we are experiencing a bit of a throwback to the time period often referred to as, “The Era of Flower Children”.
“Sixties inspired fashion is a thing now, and also sweaters and boots,” senior Isabella Sanders said.
Boots are the best thing about fall and they are absolutely a defining feature of the season.
“Beanies are really cute if you can pull them off, and scarves and cute socks with boots are cute too,” senior Linda Li said, “boots just make every outfit so much more beautiful.”
Going along with the 60’s trend, the Chelsea boot, an ankle high boot whose most notable feature is the elastic side panel, has made an extreme comeback. This particular boot is an iconic element of the 60’s, first made popular by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who commissioned four pairs for each member of The Beatles after seeing the shoe in a window on the streets of London.
Time to get rid of your combat boots, which you’ve probably worn past the point of “cool and grunge”, and into more of a “I’m trying really hard to rock these shoes but I really need a new pair of boots” type of thing.
This year, replace your usual Vans or Converse with a pair of Chelsea boots to rock your outfit.
It’s no secret that dark colors like black and burgundy are popular colors during the fall and winter seasons, but if you want to break away from these dreary colors, try a colorful jacket for a pop of color.
“The light pink jacket from last year is still big, but apparently this year, electric blue coats are really supposed to be trending,” Sanders said.
This time of year, many places like Forever 21 and Target have stocked up on really affordable fall clothing, so pick some up next time you’re in the area.
