The Davis High women’s varsity team is sitting pretty for the playoffs after beating Franklin High with a score of 5-4 on Monday.
The close victory for DHS was even sweeter given that it avenges the Blue Devils only loss of the season a few weeks ago, in an 8-1 match against Franklin.
Going into Monday’s affair both teams had only one loss in the season. But after the dust had settled Franklin’s loss total doubled to two. The Davis team feels confident going into the playoffs, given that the Blue Devils are topping their league.
The Blue Devils need to win its next two matches against Pleasant Grove and Monterey Trail to win the Delta League and take the number one seed in the playoffs. “To win the Delta League means much more now. It was a given last year but now we had to fight to win it,” DHS women’s tennis coach Sally Hosley said.
Three wins in singles and two wins in doubles gave Davis all it needed to complete a 5-4 win.
The pair of Angela Fleming and Maddie Yang beat their Franklin counters 7-6 and 6-1. That was backed by a strong showing from Aydan Prime and Rebeca Engelhard (7-6, 6-1) who completed the doubles wins.
While on the flip side with singles, Lauren Duan’s (6-3, 6-4) and Megan Ewens’ (6-2, 6-4) victories gave way for Jenna Mould (6-4, 7-5) to seal the victory for the Blue Devils.”Today’s difference was we had a healthy Lauren Duan.” said Hosley. Hosley was also impressed by Mould bouncing back to beat the same opponent that she had lost to in the last match against Franklin
The women’s tennis team is ready to flex its muscles against Pleasant Grove on Wednesday, then Monterey Trail the following Wednesday.
