While many students at Davis High enjoy playing music and singing in performances or plays, other musicians turn to websites such as YouTube to share their talents.

Senior Camila Ortiz created her own YouTube channel when she was in 5th grade to post videos of herself singing.

“I wanted to post a video of myself covering a Regina Spektor song,” Ortiz said. “It’s a really embarrassing video, looking back.”

Ortiz posts videos of herself singing both covers and her own original music. She tries to get videos up once every two or three months.

The videos get anywhere from 100 to 10,000 views with all different kinds of feedback, according to Ortiz.

“Feedback has mostly been positive, with some spam, some jerks and some constructive criticism,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz began singing when she was four in musical theater productions, and then later began singing covers of songs and writing her own music. She would love to make music a professional career if possible.

Ortiz wouldn’t consider YouTube as a way to become famous, but finds it a good place to start and get herself out there. She has been offered some performance opportunities that she wouldn’t have gotten without having a YouTube channel.

Overall, however, YouTube is a nice place for Ortiz to share her music with the rest of the world.

“Writing and performing music can be a really private thing, if you do it by yourself, so it’s nice to be able to share that with people and get feedback from them. YouTube is great for that.”
