The Sac-Joaquin Section Championships took place on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Willow Hill Reservoir next to Folsom High School. Both varsity teams qualified for the CIF state meet, with the women’s team finishing in second place and the men’s varsity team finishing in first overall. DHS also had JV and frosh/soph teams competing for section titles.
As teams prepare for a long day of running, they set up tents to provide snacks and a shady place to rest for their runners.
A medical team is always ready to help any runner who has been hurt from a sprained ankle or who has passed out from exhaustion.
The varsity men line up at the start line next to the other teams before the starting gun releases them.
As the gun sounds, the men’s varsity race begins as runners fight for a spot near the front.
Junior Fiona O’Keeffe leads the varsity womens race just ten meters out. O’Keeffe won the race with a time of 16:57, more than a minute faster than the second place finisher.
Sophomore Sofia Castiglioni is cheered on by fellow DHS runners. Castiglioni finished fourth to help the DHS women’s varsity place second overall, qualifying as a team for the state meet.
One of the more memorable features of this course is a central lake that runners circle during their race.
Sophomore Aaron Bushnell rounds a corner finishing seventh overall in the men’s sophomore race.
Sophomores Nicholas Leacox and Fox Conner finished sixth and twelfth respectively to help the DHS men’s sophomore team finish third overall, beating out their rival, Jesuit.
DHS alumni carry the Blue Devil flag as they walk to cheer on Davis runners.
Junior Samuel Ruhe powers up a hill. Ruhe finished ninth in the men’s JV race, helping DHS take first.
Senior Brian Song crosses the finish line, placing eighth overall in the men’s varsity race.
As runners cross the finish line exhausted, they are handed water and are helped to untie their shoes.
The men’s varsity team won their race and with it their third section championship in a row. They qualified for the state meet.
