The Davis High women’s varsity basketball team pulled a 74-62 win from a closely contested home game against Elk Grove.
Going into the game the Davis women knew that Elk Grove would prove tough competition. “Elk Grove is always a nice rivalry, the games are always competitive and high energy,” head coach Heather Highshoe said.
According to Highshoe, the team battled all the way to the end of the game, knowing when to push it. “We knew […] that it would be scratching all the way through, and they stepped up on defense, and they stepped up when it mattered the most and took care of the ball.”
The first half started quickly, with Davis gaining possession and some quick points. Sophomore Alyssa Lengtat had a few breakaways ending in scores which she attributes to “playing more confident[ly] than I have been.” Lengtat added that she enjoyed the game and feels that the team improved on things they have been working on.
“We were really trying to out-rebound them and have less turnovers than we normally do and[…] to control the speed of the game, and it really pulled through.”
Highshoe agreed. “They were really patient with the ball too [and made] smart passes.”
Second half proved the Blue Devils’ half. Their defense tightened up, forcing several turnovers and getting to the basket on offense.
By the fourth quarter Davis had a double digit lead, adding to scores from multiple three-point baskets by senior Caitlin Mazzoleni and a score by ninth grader Kelsey Forrester on a technical foul.
Mazzoleni said she felt she played well because she prepared before the game. “I got in the gym beforehand and put up a lot of shots to get ready.” She also thought her teammates proved themselves as well. “ I feel our team played really well too, I’m really proud of our team”
The win over Elk Grove is especially exciting for this senior. “It’s my last time playing Elk Grove ever, and we had a pretty tough loss against them last year when I was a junior, so it’s great revenge,” Mazzoleni said.
