The class of 2016 gathered to celebrate the beginning of their last year in high school at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
“Senior Sunrise” is an annual event for seniors to get together with friends and watch the sunrise as a peaceful way to start off their first day of school. Traditionally, the event has been open to both students of Davis High School and Da Vinci Charter Academy. However, there was some controversy about whether or not this year’s sunrise should be open to Da Vinci students.
Da Vinci senior Chloe Chan attended the DHS sunrise. She encouraged other classmates to do so as well, because it’s one of the only events that the schools share.
“It’s a good opportunity for them to bond and spend time together,” Chan said.
After attending, Chan felt that it was a good time spent with her friends from both schools, as well as a good way to start the year.
Senior Alex Lerman agrees with Chan, and believes that Da Vinci students should be able to attend the sunrise with DHS students.
“Da Vinci students should be able to attend if they are willing to travel all the way to the high school at 6:10 a.m.,” Lerman said.
Senior Jordan King recognizes the significance of the event as the “start of our last year at DHS, and the start of our last year with our friends that we have been with since kindergarten.” King enjoyed seeing his friends that he has been with since childhood, and looks forward to having an amazing year.
Senior Makenna Rubinstein also liked attending with her friends.
“I think Senior Sunrise is cool because it’s like we are starting our last year together and then we get to end it together at the sunset,” Rubinstein said.
Lerman thought it was nice to bring all the seniors together so people could socialize with others they haven’t seen all summer.
King feels Senior Sunrise has changed his view on senior year.
“[Senior Sunrise] put a positive spin on senior year and brought it to my attention that it is in fact senior year, so I won’t forget that it’s my last year here at DHS,” said King, who will try his best to enjoy his year and make every second count until the class of 2016 gathers again for Senior Sunset.
