Lauren Duan sets herself before getting ready to serve. She tosses the ball up and sends the ball soaring over the net. Her opponent fails to receive, and Duan wins the first game of her match. She then goes on to dominate the rest of the match, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior captain Duan’s commanding victory was reflective of the Davis High women’s tennis team’s victory over Sheldon–the Blue Devils tallied eight other wins in the meeting on Monday, Sept. 14.
In the blowout victory, DHS won all its doubles matches and all but one singles match to beat Sheldon 8-1. The lone loss was by junior Amy Fang, who battled back from one set down to tie the match, but lost the tie breaker 7-10.
Sophomore Nancy Avoce played her first match of the season with her doubles partner sophomore Julia Lovely. The pair won their match 6-0, 6-0.
“We were really nervous in the beginning because Sheldon looked good in the warm-ups. But our serves were good and we got more confidence during the first set,” Avoce said.
In light of DHS’ dominant performance, Duan says the match-up was preparation for the harder upcoming week.
“[The match] felt pretty good. In the beginning of the season, we aren’t playing really challenging teams. But later this week, we’ll have some tough people [Franklin and St. Francis] so it’s preparing us for it,” Duan said.
The win against Sheldon marks DHS’ second league match; the team is a perfect 2-0.
