The Davis High women’s tennis team had a clean sweep against Monterey Trail on Monday, Sept. 28 on its home court, pulling off a 9-0 victory.
No. 1 singles player and junior captain Lauren Duan played against the Mustangs’ strongest player, Lisa Cummings. Some of their rallies lasted over 20 swings but the match-up ended in scores of 6-3 and 6-2 in Duan’s favor.
No. 1 doubles pair of seniors Soomi Yoo and Sherry Zheng shut out their opponents with 6-0 and 6-0 wins to wrap-up DHS’ overall win.
“We had really good serves and Sherry made a lot of down the line shots that were really stellar,” Yoo said.
No. 3 doubles juniors Chiara Armstrong and Amy Fang also dominated their opponents, giving up no points in the final tallies.
“I think we did well sticking to our game even though our opponents might not have been up to our level quite yet,” Armstrong said.
When games finish as quickly as Monday’s meeting, head coach Sally Hosley takes the opportunity to have the team play against each other.
“This is where we get a lot of our good match play. After our match, we can work on things that weren’t working out during the match, I can try some different doubles configurations, and just have some more practice time,” Hosley said.
After their win against the Mustangs, No. 2 doubles juniors Addie O’Hanlon and Sage Furman took on Armstrong and Fang for a friendly intrasquad challenge that Fang said is a way to improve.
“Our coach Sally usually sends us out to play with each other and practice a little bit so we can have a challenging match with a couple of the other girls before our big games this week,” Fang said.
The team’s next match is against Elk Grove at home on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
