Rain complicates transportation to school

The rainy season has arrived once again and students who do not drive themselves or take a bus to school have two choices: get drenched or find a ride.
For some, getting a ride isn’t as simple as asking a parent.
Junior Maya McHale usually bikes to school. However, when it rains she has a system to avoid dampening her day.
In the mornings, McHale rides to school with her mom, a teacher at Davis High. In the afternoon, she must either find a ride home with a friend or take the bus back.
“The bus system is nice and super convenient. It goes right to my neighborhood,” she said. McHale advises other students struggling to find a dry way home to utilize the bus system.
Junior Rebeca Engelhard biked to school, rain or shine, up until this year.
“Biking in the rain isn’t fun. I would always walk in late cold and soaking wet,” Engelhard said.
Engelhard recommends wearing extra layers that can be taken off when soaked. She also cautions bikers to be careful when turning corners to avoid slipping on wet roads.
Junior Laura Hiller still bikes to school during the rainy season.
“It makes me cold and soggy for the whole day, but the worst part is when I’ve done my hair and it gets all messy,” Hiller said. To warm up, she enjoys bringing hot chocolate to school.
Sometimes, students biking in the rain can catch a break.
“This one time I was biking with my friend and we were just soaking wet when we got to class so our teacher excused us and we got to spend the entire period in the bathroom,” Hiller said.
Hiller offers two pieces of advice for fellow bikers: “One, don’t do it. Two, if you have to do it, put your phone in a dry place.”
