Davis High jazz musicians will perform at their annual benefit dinner, “At the Coconut Grove,” at Emerson Junior High on March 5 and 6. Saturday’s show begins at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday’s show starts at 1:15 p.m.
Headlining the show is the DHS Jazz Band, supported by three junior high jazz bands and Jazzmatazz, a band created through local director Celia Cottle’s youth jazz program.
Saturday’s guests will enjoy dinner catered by Cracchiolos, mocktails, a silent auction and a raffle.
Sunday offers a slightly different scene, including the Latin Jazz Band from DHS Latin Jazz Club, and two additional bands from Cottle: the J Street Jazz Catts and Sax by Popular Demand. Dinner will not be served Sunday, but coffee, dessert and mocktails will be provided.
The event is organized by the DHS Band Boosters, and supported by the generosity of many businesses and community members.
“While the school district funds the director, and practice and performance buildings, the Band Boosters fund everything else,” Band Boosters president John Horn said in a press release. “Our community has continued to support the music program in Davis schools with the passage of parcel taxes to backfill funding losses from the state. This event offers an opportunity for the Davis community to see these tax dollars at work and enjoy jazz performed by student musicians.”
Tickets for Saturday are $40 for adults, $25 for students and $15 for student performers who wish to have a catered dinner. Groups will be able to reserve a premium table seating up to ten guests for $440.
Tickets for Sunday are $25 for adults, $10 for students and $270 for a Premium Table.
Discounts are also available for combination tickets, bought for both Saturday and Sunday shows. Tickets are available at the Band Boosters’ charity auction website.
Proceeds from “At the Coconut Grove” are distributed between DHS bands; the event funds band trips and general band needs such as instrument repair, music purchases and new instruments.
