The first taste test I took at The Good Scoop was unforgettable. The second the organic ice cream touched my tongue, there was an almost indescribable feeling; it felt like the little spoonful exploded on my tongue. It was almost as if the warmth of my mouth popped an ice cream water balloon, unleashing a cold splash of extravagant creamy flavors.

The Good Scoop’s ice cream is wonderfully unique. Because it is organic, the flavor doesn’t rely on a sugar base, which creates an authentic rich flavor that is simple, yet layered.

Whether you like to stick to the basics with ice cream or adventure into unknown territory, The Good Scoop is the place for you. The shop, located on G Street, carries everyday flavors and rotates the specialty ones.

The ice cream used in the store is Tara’s Organic Ice Cream (TOIC), which the owners picked out after falling in love with it. TOIC is made with all-natural ingredients, using local dairy, fresh fruit, and earthy herbs and spices. Their purpose is to honor the natural flavors placed on this earth, using just the amount of sugar they need and letting the ingredients handle the flavoring.

In the process, they create and healthy ice cream full of nutrients; you don’t have to feel bad about having a scoop or two.

Though it might be hard to choose a flavor, one of owner Marnie Layton’s beliefs is that tasting is essential, and the store encourages you to try as many flavors as possible.

Apart from ice cream, The Good Scoop also offers brownie-ice cream sandwiches, organic teas, popsicles and a famous iced coffee from Portland.

Though the ice cream is delicious, it is the owners who make the place special. Layton, her brother Stephen and his wife Azure have shared the dream of opening an ice cream shop for a while and you can tell how happy they are to be in business.

After talking with them about their shop, you can tell how carefully planned everything is–from hand-picking ice cream in Berkeley to finding an iced coffee all the way from Portland, every little detail in the place is special.
