The year of the pig kicked off 10 days early in the Yolo County Library at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 26.
The event started with traditional chinese music with a modern twist from the Davis Splash Music Ensemble.
LISTEN to music from the Davis Splash Music Ensemble:
Director Jane Zhang and president Calvin Hwang lead the ensemble to perform songs such as “Purple Bamboo” and “Jasmine Flower”. Their music embraces both Chinese and western instruments.
“It’s both east and west, traditional and modern,” Zhang said.
Many of the members of the ensemble currently attend Davis High.
After the music, Kesler Wang and Michael Li performed martial arts for a short time before children’s crafts and activities were set out on tables.
Joan Tuss, adult services librarian for the library, played a major part in the organization of the event. Tuss set out many of the crafts while the musicians and martial artists were performing.
“Just fun stuff for kids to celebrate the new year,” Tuss said.
