Orchestra students from Montgomery Elementary school presented their musician skills to family and friends at their first concert of the year at Brunelle theatre on Jan. 31. Fourth through sixth graders played side by side with conductor Lydia Cooley.

In the beginning of the concert students warmed up with a classic: “Hot Cross Buns.” Cooley then explained the techniques that the students used while playing a string instrument like “how to hold it, pluck, and then we add the bow, learning fingering and combining everything together.”

Beginning and intermediate musicians played “Fallen Leaves” together which was a light and graceful song.

LISTEN to students performing “Fallen Leaves”:

The intermediate players played quick, and more complicated songs on their own like a Bohemian tune which was quick and upbeat.

Another song was played back and forth between the high strings and the low strings with an assortment of plucks and quick notes.

At the end of the half hour concert, Cooley was gifted a bouquet of flowers and a large hand of applause from the audience. She was very proud of her students, and what they have accomplished this year as musicians.
