At the Davis High incoming sophomore parent night on Feb. 5, parents bustled in, carrying a packet of information and a course guide with them to their seats in the dimly lit Brunelle Theatre. There, parents and a few incoming students sat and waited for the first speaker of the night to start preparing them for the three year journey these students will embark on in the fall of 2019.

The night started out with head counselor Catherine Pereira welcoming the families and explaining what the years ahead would bring and how to make them the best they could be. “One thing you will hear a lot tonight is balance. Balance helps students be physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. We want students to find that balance in their day. How are they balancing their academics? What are they getting involved in? Remember, they are only teenagers once,” Pereira said.

After this, Principal Tom McHale came and spoke about all that DHS has to offer. “Nearly two thirds of our students participate on our 30 sports teams, we have a rich array of music, drama, and art courses to explore, our CTE programs in agriculture, robotics, computer science, publication, and auto are very popular. Our students enjoy participating in speech and debate, model UN, and academic decathlon,” McHale said.

Next up was Associated Student Body President senior Kenneth Wang who explained his own experience at DHS. After listing all of the activities he got involved in, he explained that, “this mindset of being open to trying different, new things, whether or not you know what you want to do in the future, is really important.”

To finish off the presentation, Pereira and fellow counselor Kimberly Liu spoke about enrollment in classes at DHS and all of the important information parents should know including schedules, A-G requirements, honors classes, and Independent Lifetime Sports.
