The Davis High men’s golf team kicked off league play with a victory over Cosumnes Oaks on March 13. The nine-hole match was played at El Macero golf club with sunny skies and windy conditions.
Junior Collin Yee shot a match low 38 while his playing partner Griffin Long shot one shot higher at 39. “I played really well, but still didn’t score as good as I hoped,” Long said. “Still had a good time out there.”
“We all played well, it was tough conditions because it was windy,” Yee said. “However, we stayed composed and ended up playing very well as a team.”
This marked the first Delta League match in history for Cosumnes Oaks as it is their first year in the tough Delta League. Already Cosumnes is the top team in the Elk Grove district and despite the loss they are positive about what lies ahead.

As for Davis, the team and fans are ecstatic about what lies ahead for the Blue Devils. “We might go to the State Championships,” the team’s golf consultant Pete Fuqua said.
“They have a strong group of guys,” athletic director Jeff Lorensen said. “Some of the younger guys are learning from the experienced ones.”
This experience is what head coach Karl Ronning is most excited about.
“[They have an] awful lot of experience,” Ronning said. “Lots of seniors who carry a lot of depth.”
