Under the lights at the Ron and Mary Brown stadium, the student section and packed stands chanted in leis and tropical tops for Hawaiian night. They cheered for the Davis High varsity football team as their players shut out Pioneer High 48-0 on Sept. 13.
With strong offensive runs from seniors Taylor Vaughn, Ben Busano, and Xavier Chambers, and junior Aaron Turner, DHS was able to score 34 points in the first half alone.
Coinciding with the large lead from the opening minutes, the defensive effort of the Blue Devils was noticeable.
Defense from junior Zach Brooks and Donovan Garvin kept the Patriots quiet, and with the teamwork of senior defenders Marquist Brower-Douglas, Uraib Ali, Tendai Gundumura, Sebastian Tamayo and Joey Asta, the game ended with another shutout for the undefeated squad.
“Overall we came out hard, executed our game plan, and won a game we should have,” Brooks said.
Between the offense and defense, their intensity and work ethic showed out on the field. From hours and hours of practicing, Davis was able to execute the win. Second year head coach, Steve Smyte, is hoping to drive the team straight for a successful season.
The Devils hope to add another win to their record as they take on Elk Grove on Friday, Sept. 20.
“We’re excited for Elk Grove and the level of competition we’ll be competing against,” Brooks said.
