Constant pressure was the key to victory in the Davis High varsity women’s basketball 45-41 win over the Whitney Wildcats on Dec. 18.
After two recent tournaments, Davis had an overall record of 3-5 going into the game last night against Whitney’s 4-6 record.
Throughout the game, both teams maintained strong defense, racing neck and neck throughout the first quarter, ending with a 15-13 Whitney lead.
Nonetheless, junior Skylar Schouten and senior Surina Beal pushed through the Wildcat defense in the second quarter, which gave DHS the lead as Beal landed a three-pointer to end the first half 24-22, Devils ahead by two.
Throughout the second half of the game, junior Lily Hessl took the spotlight with several free throws and an unstoppable three-pointer, leading Davis to victory.
Preparation for this match-up consisted of lots of practice and research on their opponent for the Blue Devils.
“We watched film of the game they played earlier in the season, but we also just did normal practice stuff like running drills,” Beal said.
Besides practicing with her team, junior Nika Edson has a unique way of preparing for her basketball games.
“Before each game, I listen to ‘Till I Collapse’ by Eminem and ‘Intergalactic’ by the Beastie Boys so that I can turn up the bass in my truck and get pumped,” Edson said.
The women’s basketball team season continues this weekend in the upcoming Dixon Ram Jam tournament against Pioneer.
