This year, the Davis High Theater Board is working hard to prepare for the annual school play, which will be “Heathers.” The musical’s auditions will be held on Zoom and take place from March 29 to 31. Participation in the DHS Theatre’s production of “Heathers” is open to all Davis students grades 9-12.

Maya Bailey, DHS senior and DHS Theatre Board president, has been planning “Heathers” for a few months and is thrilled to begin practicing.

“Each person auditioning will have to sing a couple short cuts from the show’s music and will likely read a scene or two from the script with another actor. It’s the same process we usually do in person, except virtual, so we will have to figure out things like accompaniment and scene partners in advance,” Bailey said.

Senior Sophia Davis, a member of the Theater Board, plans on auditioning to be in the musical as well. According to Davis, “the songs from the show [will be] given to everyone in advance so they can prepare before auditioning virtually.”

While this process is different from previous years, Davis feels that the ability to hold them live over Zoom won’t be a roadblock for the show. However, if auditions are allowed to be held in person, they will still be very different from past year’s audition processes.

Senior Maya Rogalski, the music director, explains what these auditions may look like if they can be held in person.

“We would limit the number of people there [on campus] at a time, require masks and social distancing. Right now, I am hopeful that they will be able to run auditions outside, socially distanced and with masks,” Rogalski said.

Although the musical won’t be performed until, tentatively, May 14, 15 and 16, students are already thinking of safe ways to perform the musical.

“The Director of our show, Chad Fisk, several Theater Board members and I met with Tom McHale and talked about all the possibilities for our show. The show is going to be amazing!” Gwyneth Bruch said.

“Performances will almost certainly be live. Right now, the uncertainty is around whether or not there will be a live audience. Either way, we hope to have the cast performing live, and broadcast it to anyone who wants to watch!” Rogalski said.
