“The Six Women Artists” is an art exhibition at the Artery displaying the work of six local artists. The Artery is an artist-owned gallery that has aimed to provide public access to fine art and contemporary crafts since 1974.
The exhibition was held Sep. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. in downtown Davis.
The six local women were Joanne Anderson, Marie-Thérèse Brown, Nancy Chadwick, Kathleen C. Gamper, Anne Lincoln and Carol Stone. Most of the art on display were paintings except for that of Chadwick: a photographer that has learned to blend her work with paintings.
“I do a lot of travel photography, I travel all over the world,” Chadwick said.
Chadwick has taken her photos in places like Laos and Venice but has also taken photos of the local area like Winters and along the Yolo causeway.
“During the pandemic because I couldn’t travel, I just took my own photographs, and since I was in this group of painters, I made them into paintings.” Chadwick said.
Stone incorporates texture in her oil paintings. She will often spend days or even weeks at a time on her more detailed and complex paintings.
“I create a composition and surface that is not only visually appealing but texturally pleasing,” Stone said.
Oscar Wisnia, a Davis High student who attended the event, enjoyed Stone’s work.
“It was all very pleasant. It was all rolling hillscapes or oceans. It’s a different kind of art than what I usually see and that was really nice,” Wisnia said.
