As Halloween approaches, the Davis Food Co-op is hosting a pumpkin decorating contest for the third year in a row. Davis residents drop off their decorated pumpkins to be on display in the grocery store.
One of the pumpkin artists, Brynn Cammarosano, was excited to participate this year. “It took me 45 minutes to an hour so it felt good to be able to show it off after all my hard work,” Cammarosano said.
This was Cammarosano’s first year participating. She liked the experience and being able to see others creativity. “It brought the community together in a small festive way and I will definitely be doing it again next year,” Cammarosano said.
Most of the pumpkins were not carved traditionally. Instead, they were painted or carved on the outside, just enough to reveal the white pulp.
Sophia Vikstrom made her pumpkin by carving the outside to make a design from the book, “Where the Wild Things Are”.
“It gives a spooky mood that matches Halloween perfectly, which is why I chose it. And I liked how it was a different way of decorating a pumpkin,” Vikstrom said. She hopes to win the contest “but the experience was all that mattered.”
The Co-op marketing manager, Vincent Marchese, enjoyed watching the pumpkins come into the store and having them be seen by shoppers. “This event is an excuse to put their hard work on display for everyone to enjoy,” Marchese said.
