Within Davis High, there is a smaller community that shares a passion for the fantasy game, Dungeons and Dragons.
Junior Luke Chale has been playing since he was in seventh grade. “I met someone who was super into D&D, and he invited me to play with him, and since then I’ve just loved playing the game,” Chale said.
D&D is a fantasy game in which players roll dice to determine almost everything, such as health, damage, etc. During a game, or campaign, the players work together to create and solve an adventure by transforming small interactions and occurrences into a unique story.
Senior Juno Ocean, who also plays the game, says D&D is built on three pillars: exploration, combat, and roleplay. “Exploration is based on creating a world for people to explore, and having them engage with the environment, […] combat is having them have stakes in the world [and roleplay] is about being connected to each other,” Ocean said.
“The game is really entertaining [and] it’s a great way to hang out with friends for a couple hours,” Chale said. Chale plays twice a month with a group of eight friends.
Chale recommends that other people try it. “It’s a great game. It’s worth giving it a shot, and if you don’t like it then you only lose a couple hours of your [time],” Chale said.
“[I play] mostly for the creative freedom it provides, […] I like to create a lot of stuff,” Ocean said.
Ocean has played for four years and plays as a dungeon master. “[D&D] is like a play where you have all of the actors and the set. The [dungeon master] is like the set, and the players are the actors,” she said.
“Being able to create worlds and environments for people to explore is really fun. And then for them to engage in this cooperative storytelling […] is just beautiful,” Ocean said.
