Davis High school nurse Abigail Serin hosted sex education sessions for seniors the week of Nov. 8 and 15 during their government and economics classes.
Serin started the DHS sex education program in 2018, presenting to all juniors. However, last school year, due to the pandemic, no sessions were held because they would have been “[too] chaotic and inconvenient for teachers,” Serin said.
This year, Serin is hosting the program for seniors to make up for them missing last year. Next year, the sex education program will go back to being issued to just juniors.
Serin utilizes a curriculum called “Health Connected”, which is a refresher course for high school students. Her presentations this week covered the subjects of sexuality, gender identity, consent and healthy relationships. She plans on presenting to seniors one more time in the second semester on STIs and sexual health among other topics.
“The curriculum is way more relevant to high school students [than junior high students] who start to become more sexually active,” Serin said. DJUSD students take health classes in 5th, 7th and 9th grade.
Senior Peyton Schoen felt like the presentation did not cover anything new. “It was tiresome because a lot of these things we covered in 9th grade, but I do think that the refresher is important,” Schoen said.
While the presentation heavily focused on consent and healthy relationships, Schoen hopes that when Serin presents again next semester about sex, that she includes information about LGBTQ+ sex. “I never learned about that in sex ed classes previously,” Schoen said.
