The Davis High women’s water polo team beat Granite Bay High in the championship game, 20-3 on Nov. 13, winning the Sac-Joaquin section title.
Davis earned an early lead, ending the first quarter up 5-1.
At the start of the game, “making good passes and smart plays really kickstarted the game,” senior Lindsay Taylor said.
Before half-time Davis gained another four points leaving the score 9-1.
By the end of the game Davis was able to hang onto their early lead, leaving the final score 20-3.
The championship title is very significant to the players. We showed people in the stands who the Blue Devils are,” sophomore Lucie Lapuz said.
The aggression of the, “offensive plays [were] built off of muscle memory, from the hours put in at practice” Lapuz said.
The team recognizes that there are still improvements needed before heading to the next tournament.
“We had trouble calling back for help at the beginning of the game,” Lapuz said. However, she mentioned that with a reminder from Coach Douglas Wright, “we were able to ‘flip a switch’ and correct our mistakes”
Looking forward, the team is going to be competing at their last tournament: regionals.
“We’ve worked really hard all season and hopefully our hard work will pay off,” Taylor said.
The DHS women’s water polo team is ranked fourth in California and has a winning record of 27-3.
