Davis High’s cheerleading team had their first competition of the year on Nov. 13 at the Roebbelen Center in Roseville.

They had two routines in competition: a sideline cheer routine and a level two dance routine. Both JV and varsity won first place for their level two routines. For the sideline competition, varsity got second place and JV got first place.

Additionally, varsity got awarded best jumps for the level two competition.

“I feel like our first competition is just to see where we are and how we score, what areas we are weak in and how we can improve. We can then apply this to future competitions,” varsity captain Lily Rigor said.

The varsity routine was not without mistakes, however. “I had one little fall, but it adds character to the routine,” Rigor said.

The varsity team lost part of their warm up time for the level two competition due to a scheduling mistake.

“We were nervous about the routine because these stunts were harder than ones we’ve done in the past. And, having less time to practice it and warm up for it, really stressed us,” Rigor said.

Even with less warm up time, the cheerleaders were proud of how they did. “I was really proud about how we performed today because we haven’t attended a comp in a year and a half. We worked really hard to get here and it was really fun,” senior Carolena Morales said.

Last year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the cheer team did not attend any in-person competitions. They attended one online competition, however Rigor does not count it because nothing came of it.

“I was not expecting the JV to do as well as they did. They were figuring out how to do it and were having a couple of rough spots during practices, but they hit everything and did really well,” Rigor said.
