Davis High’s women’s water polo team beat Leland High in their regional playoff game with a final score of 20-9 on Nov. 16.
Davis started the game with a series of goals, ending the first quarter with a score of 5-1. Senior Lindsay Taylor contributed their early lead to, “our really strong counterattacking [and] our passing was very good,” Taylor said.
“In the first quarter, I missed a couple shots, so that was hard to try and come back [from], but I just had to go through my rhythm and be confident in myself and my teammates to support me and execute our game plan,” junior Mackenzie Walker said.
No. eight for LHS, Jenna Flynn, is considered by many of the Davis players to be the best female high school player in the nation. “We focused on double teaming her and making sure she wasn’t gonna get any goals. So, that was our game plan and I think we executed that perfectly,” Taylor said.
Walker attributed their win to their strong offense. “We were just attacking the goal continuously throughout the game; we were never comfortable,” Walker said. “[I think] we can always do better on defense, just making sure we are communicating because we slipped up a few times there, I know I did.”
The DHS water polo team now moves on to the semifinals against Soquel High on Thursday, Nov. 18.
“It’s pretty exciting. This tournament has only been held for three years and all three years we have made it to semi-finals,” Taylor said.
