A number of Davis High students enjoy collecting crystals and some even wear them as well.
Some believe that crystals have special healing powers while others are simply attracted to them because of their unique and eye-catching appearance.
Senior Alex Barth both collects and wears crystals.
“[Crystals] are really cute to wear and [are] a fun thing to believe in,” Barth said.
There are a large number of crystals to exist and each is said to protect against something or is said to have some sort of healing power.
Barth has two favorite crystals.
“I love black obsidian and tiger’s eye because they protect you from negative energy,” Barth said.
She also wears different types of quartz – such as smoky quartz and rose quartz, amethyst and carnelian because they “make [her] feel protected from bad juju.
Similarly, junior Malia Peris always carries around rose quartz.
“I like rose quartz because it helps with self-love,” Peris said.
The crystals she carries around may vary, though she always carries around clear quartz as well.
“When I get anxious I carry around amethyst […] I always carry around clear quartz because it is the universal human crystal,” Peris said.
She also likes opalite because it helps with communication and carnelian because it helps with motivation.
While Peris thinks crystals are pretty, she thinks they are more than that.
“[Crystals] can help spiritually if you use them correctly,” she said.
Peris and senior Ha-khanh Pham both have been into crystals for a long time.
“I’ve been collecting [crystals] since age four or five,” Pham said.
One of Pham’s “core memories” from when she was a young child is going to the gift shops at museums.
“I only liked going to the gift shops. I begged my parents to buy me the pouches of rocks that were always in the gift shops,” Pham said.
However, the majority of her crystal collection was not from gift shop purchases but were given to her.
One of her dad’s coworkers had daughters that owned a National Geographic rock tumbler – something Pham thought was fascinating as a young child.
“You can buy a lot of rocks in their raw form and you can tumble them so they become really smooth and shiny,” Pham said.
“I was only 10 or 12, but most of my [crystal] collection comes from [the daughters],” Pham said.
Pham is a long-time crystal collector but admits she didn’t “get back into it until [crystal collecting] started getting popular.”
Pham’s favorite crystal is the tiger’s eye. She recently purchased an entire pound of it.
“Everywhere I go I am gifted tiger’s eye so I thought I should buy some and gift it to people,” Pham said.
