The Davis High halls are filled with tension as each student has their own set of responsibilities for finals. Students taking advanced placement and honors classes have even more stress, students say.

“I’m looking to end the semester off on a high note,” junior Caleb Yoon said. Yoon takes Physics Honors, AP U.S. History and pre-calculus amongst other classes.

With such high level classes, Yoon likes to play the violin to de-stress and relax.

Some of his strategies for test preparation go all the way back to when he was in elementary school. The day before the test, Yoon likes to study and eat rice because to him it helps the next day. “Good grades are in my blood,” Yoon said.

Yoon is not alone. “Studying is a crucial way to pass tests,” junior Holt Klineberg said. Klineberg’s semester grade is very dependent on the grades he will receive on this week’s assignments.

But not everyone is hitting the books. “Studying, I feel like, does more harm than good,” sophomore Isabella Gonfiotti said. “It feels like one of the worst times of the school year for me.”

Many students are finding that their grade fluctuates. There could be many reasons behind this depending on the person. “Sometimes I just don’t feel like doing the work and that causes me to stress,” junior Suprit Dahal said.

Dahal thinks of finals week as a week that is a lot of work–but the big reward is two weeks of winter break. “I’m excited to hang out with my friends and family that I haven’t seen in a while and travel,” he said.

Stress may be rising because this school year is different from last year. Counselor Ann Murao says that students adjusting from going to school for only a few hours a day to six or seven periods has a large impact.

Many of the days are shortened to only half days this week. With a normal Monday, first period final on Tuesday and early dismissal the rest of the week. The 12:35 p.m. dismissal allows for more study or rest time.
