“Sing 2” Review
By Jihan Moon
At the end of “Sing 2”, Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) and his gang put on a show that got me springing to my feet, clapping and cheering wildly. I say that with no exaggeration.
Following the events of the original movie, Moon takes his group of performers to Redshore City, a Las Vegas stand-in, to impress renowned entertainment mogul, Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale).
As he did with the first, writer-director Garth Jennings explores a range of different facets of the entertainment business. From lighter subjects like stagefright to more adult topics like abusive management, Jennings nails his dissection of each theme all while keeping it fun and playful for young audiences.
With vibrant animation and colorful characters, the movie is engaging throughout with diverting, if a little basic, musical numbers. However, what makes this movie truly special is the final show.
The production is made up of four performances, each one distinct and stunningly visualized. From the tense stage fights to the sharp choreography and moving character moments, I have never been so impressed by any animated musical number in a movie ever (again, I say that with zero hyperbole intended).
The only minor issue I have with their show is that the vocals were not as special as the staging. That is not to say that the voice actors are bad singers, but they did not get true vocalists that stand above the visuals.
Watch “Sing 2” in theatres now.
