With a surge in cases and a new variant apparent across the United States and in Yolo County, event postponements are underway. On Jan. 4, Davis High administration announced that the winter ball would be delayed until as early as March.
The dance was originally scheduled to take place on Jan. 15.
The delay of the event came after guidance from Yolo County personnel, who recommended the postponement of large events.
The updated guidelines are due to the increase in COVID-19 cases as the Omicron variant spreads throughout Yolo County.
“I’m bummed… I was getting excited for the size of the dance and how over-the-top we were going to go… but it’s the safest decision,” said Anthony Vasquez, supervisor of student government at DHS.
Over the last few weeks, DHS student government has been working hard to create an inclusive event.
“I think it was the best decision, we want an event that is safe for everyone,” said Lindsey Fitzpatrick, head of the winter ball committee.
Prior to the postponement of the dance, students were thrilled, anticipating “a night where we could relax and have fun” sophomore Reyan Islam said.
The dance was set to be ‘enchanted forest’ themed, with lights, drapes, speakers and props to be set up at the school.
Fitzpatrick expressed concern over if the ‘enchanted forest’ theme will fit for spring.
However, Fitzpatrick can confirm that if a new date for the dance gets set, negative COVID-19 tests will be required.
As for the placement of the event, the student government is hoping for an inside venue, but states an outdoor location will be sufficient if staying indoors isn’t safe.
