Claw Clips, a trend first introduced in the 1990s, have skyrocketed in popularity over this past year.

“Out of all the hair accessories that we sell at the store, claw clips are the most popular for our customers to buy and then retail to their clients and their hair salons,” said Lizzy Rueda, who works for CosmoProf.

CosmoProf is a company that only sells to professionals in the beauty industry: cosmetologists, nail technicians and estheticians.

Rueda educates her business customers on hair products, including shampoos, conditioners, stylers and, most importantly, hair accessories.

“Basically claw clips are the most popular to retail to the public, especially since they’re coming back in style,” Rueda said.

“I’ve been working there for a year and a half, and they’ve always been popular since I started working there. Mini claw clips have also been getting really popular as well,” Rueda said.

A lot of different trends from the 90s have been back on the rise, and claw clips seem to be one of the most popular of the returning fashions.

“I think that it’s not surprising since so many 90s trends are trending right now,” sophomore Lena Kim said.

Kim wears claw clips at least once a week, primarily because they keep her hair up and don’t leave dents in her hair, unlike regular hair elastics.

Not everyone at Davis High is on board with the trend.

“I think they’re pretty cute but they’re also really overused, like everyone wears them now,” sophomore Addison Begley said.

While Begley has never purchased claw clips firsthand, from time to time she borrows claw clips from her best friend. Sophomore Quillan Carr is obsessed with claw clips and wears them almost every day. Carr primarily purchases her claw clips from Amazon and will only buy the clips in the color black.

When she first saw them she knew she had to have them. “When I looked around the halls, I was like, ‘oh my god, everyone has those,’” Carr said.

While some wear claw clips for the sake of the trend, others wear this hair accessory out of convenience.

Emi Arenas is a sophomore at Davis High and was given claw clips for Christmas last year. “I liked them but I got them gifted so that’s mainly to wear them,” Arenas said.

Emi Arenas picks out her black large claw clip and holds her hair up like she is putting it into a ponytail, and twists her hair, putting the claw clip in her hair over the part that she twisted. After the claw clip is in her hair Emi usually pulls out a couple of strands of hair from the sides and front.

COVID-19 has made it difficult to keep claw clips in stock. “It’s been really hard to get claw clips these past eight months. We used to sell really good quality claw clips that people loved, but I haven’t seen them for eight months now,” Rueda said.

Rueda says customers have been asking where they are, or when they will be back in stock, but due to the shortage of the supply, they are currently unavailable.

Rueda still does not know when CosmoProf will get claw clips back in stock, but hopefully soon as she misses them. Most students have been relying on buying from Amazon for their clips, though products on the site cannot always be trusted due to their cheap quality.
