The Davis High ski team competed in its third race of the season on Jan. 24. The event was held at the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe.
The races were held on a slalom course, rather than giant slalom, meaning the poles the skiers go through are narrower. “The course was pretty challenging technically wise in my opinion, and several of my teammates slid out or missed a gate and had to hike back up the hill to not be disqualified,” junior Athena Leckie said.
“This course is at a fairly low angle so it doesn’t ski very fast, but it’s really long for a slalom course so your legs are burning by the time you reach the end,” senior Lucas Voss said.
The next race will also be held at Alpine Meadows on Jan. 31. “I think everyone on the team is ready for a giant slalom race as we’ll have our third slalom in a row next week. But we’re all suffering together at least,” Leckie said.
There were three other teams racing, from Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, Colfax High School and El Dorado High School in Placerville.
DHS won first in all four divisions: varsity men’s, varsity women’s, JV men’s, and JV women’s. “The Davis team has always dominated and this race was no exception,” Leckie said. “The best part of the day was the satisfaction of finishing the race and then free skiing with my friends and coaches. I couldn’t ask for a better Monday.”
