Sophomore Tory Agnew begins the day shuffling around her room, looking for everything she needs for her busy day ahead.

Along with a heavy school workload, this year Agnew plays two varsity sports: soccer and lacrosse.

After her freshman season was cancelled due to COVID-19, Agnew is happy to be back on the field.

“I only really knew like two people going into it and they were the only other two sophomores so it was interesting to meet all these new people,” Agnew said.

Althoughtheadjustment initially was tough, she feels a part of the soccer family.

“We have had one pasta feed and it was a lot of fun. I’m excited to spend more time with the team since we haven’t had a lot of time to bond off the field,” Agnew said.

Her teammates not only commend her athletic ability but also her personality off the field.

“Tory is honestly one of the hardest working people … Tory takes … criticism as her fuel and you can see how she channels that onto the soccer field,” sophomore Sabrina Hazel said. “She supports her friends and teammates on and off the field and just has a fun, contagious energy about her.”

During the 2020-2021 season, athletes were only allowed to participate in one high school sport. Agnew chose lacrosse.

“I’m excited to build off of what we did last year and just to be back with everyone,” Agnew said.

Although only being a freshman last year, Agnew finished in the top three top scorers in lacrosse with 30 goals and led the team in ground balls and draw controls.

Even with her schedule filled, her teammates see the effort she puts in throughout practice. Agnew was the only freshman on a lacrosse team consisting of mostly upperclassmen, though she never felt like an outsider or less than her older teammates.

“I love Tory! She is the most hardworking and talented player on the (lacrosse) team and is the sweetest person ever,” senior Grace Scheuring said.

Lacrosse teammate senior Devon Morris, has known Tory for seven years. They have grown up together in their neighborhood cul-de-sac. The senior applauds Agnew’s effort in the classroom.

“She gets good grades and I know she’s in advanced classes, which can be difficult to navigate,” Morris said.

Her classmates notice that she is the definition of student-athlete, exceeding expectations in the classroom just as much on the field.

“She understands the importance of consistent high grades and always finds a way to get her work done, despite balancing school with two other sports,” sophomore Bailey Paquette said.

Like any high schooler, Agnew feels the stress of being a high-achieving student-athlete.

“Soccer and lacrosse take a huge chunk out of my day that would be free time and sometimes it is just added stress if we have a big game and a test the same day. It makes me double stressed,” Agnew said.

However, she has learned to cope with it.

“I like to listen to music or get a snack to get my mind off things and destress,” said Agnew.

Her advice to students is to find a schedule that works for them and not to worry if that schedule looks different than others because everyone lives a different life and you need to find the best fit for you.
