As the end of the high school ski season approaches, Davis High skiers are taking full advantage of their time on the slopes. The Feb. 11 race at Boreal saw not only first place for the DHS ski team in every division, but also a party in the snow.
“We had a speaker, so then after our first run we were hanging out at the top and people were dancing to the music,” sophomore Alena Voss said. “Everyone was just having a good time and chilling, it was just really fun.”
Long lines for the ski lifts meant little opportunity to ski outside of each race, so the varsity women’s team took full advantage of their downtime. As the JV men raced, those watching pulled out a speaker and began dancing and cheering them on.
“They were playing some really good songs, they were playing some Dr. Dre … and they played the Real Slim Shady,” sophomore Martin Peterson said.
However, skiers on women’s varsity were not the only ones making the most of their freetime in the particularly slushy snow. Skiers from other schools and from other divisions joined in the dancing, and the JV men had their own fun after their races.
“No one had much to do, so we just grabbed snowballs and threw them at each other. It was pretty fun. I think most everyone got involved in some way or another,” Peterson said.
With just one more race before states, on Feb. 22, the music and camaraderie of Friday’s race was a nice celebration of the season for many skiers.
“I’m very grateful for, and I’m glad that, especially this year I have a connection with the team (and we can) bring music to the mountain,” senior Gavin Lynch said.
