“In very simple terms, we play chess,” senior Aaron Nguyen said.

Nguyen, the current vice-president of the Davis High chess club, started playing chess a year and a half ago. “I thought it was pretty fun to get to learn strategy tactics,” Nguyen said.

The club meets every Wednesday and Friday in N-9 and encourages all students to join them.

“Anybody who wants to play chess or learn chess can come out and hang,” said junior Kyle Watkins, the secretary of the club. “It’s completely non-committal and casual.”

Not only do members simply play chess, but they also work on puzzles to sharpen their minds. They also explore different versions of chess-playing, such as playing in pairs.

“Fridays are mostly our casual, just one-on-one playing day and on Wednesdays we sometimes do things like puzzles as a group or we teach other versions of playing, like, how to play with two people and things like that,” Watkins said.

When playing with two people, the pair works together as a team to win the game.

“There are two boards and you can share the pieces that you capture. It’s much more intense,” Watkins said.

The club plans on hosting a tournament among its members to bring some competitive spirit to the club.

“It feels pretty good when you win,” Nguyen said.
