Early this year, student government turned the gym into an “enchanted forest” for the Winter Ball on Jan. 15. Posters had been made and decorations had been purchased, when all plans suddenly came to a halt.
Rising cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant plagued the school, and the decision was made to postpone the dance until early March. As early March came and went with no announcements about the planned date for the event, the student body speculated about the dance’s status.
But on March 9, the announcement was publicly made that Winter Ball will be held on April 9, under the name Spri-Ball.
Like with all other large events this year, the question of how COVID-19 will be handled was prevalent. The date for Spri-Ball was decided upon prior to the announcement that the district will be repealing the mask mandate on April 11, but either way, Student Government would require masks at the dance.
The dance will be held mainly indoors, but there will be space outdoors open for students. “If you need a break, need to take your mask off super quick, you can step outside,” junior class President Lindsey Fitzpatrick said.
Much like the homecoming dance, attendees will need a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the dance.
Davis High staff were displeased with student behavior at the last dance, and are working with student government to try and mitigate any dangerous or wild activity at Spri-Ball.
“We are working with admin to (create) a dance contract to help prevent any behavioral issues. The dance will be indoors so there will be less hazards as far as falling and obstacles,” said Fitzpatrick. “We are trying to make it so we know what to expect and keep it safe for everyone.”
