For about a month, Davis Joint Unified School District has been adjusting to the outdoor masking mandate. In an email that was sent to parents, Dr. Aimee Sisson said that: “If a school has over 50% of students vaccinated, I recommend lifting outdoor masking requirements.”
Feb. 22 marked the day when students and staff had the choice to wear a mask outdoors.
Prior to the possibility of not needing to wear a mask outdoors, DJUSD faced the issue of a lack of vaccination reports from parents.
“73% of secondary (students) and 60% of elementary (students were reported as) vaccinated,” said Kristin Conner, the DJUSD public information officer.
The California Department of Public Health and Gov. Gavin Newsom officially lifted the indoor mask mandate for all K-12 schools beginning March 12.
On March 3, the Board of Education came to the conclusion that DJUSD would remove the indoor mask mandate beginning April 11.
As for the 2022-2023 school year, “It is doubtful that the legislature would pass a law requiring everyone to be vaccinated to attend school, but the Governor’s order is still in effect from the fall, and he stated that vaccination would be required to attend school,” Conner said. “A mandate under the Governor’s order would allow personal belief and medical exemptions.”
