The Davis High Spri-Ball is set to take place on April 9. With the date getting closer, students are creating proposal posters and finding dates.
In previous years, the “Sadie’s” tradition has taken place, where girls are encouraged to ask people to the dance.
The tradition broke the typical stereotype of who-invites-who to a dance. However, DHS student government has not endorsed the tradition this year, with the concern that they, “don’t want to have to force a gender norm on anyone (…) or pressure anyone,” said Lindsey Fitzpatrick, head of the Spring Ball committee.
Despite the tradition not being endorsed, junior Ella Heringer decided she would invite her boyfriend, Ethan Lujan, to the dance.
“I heard from my older sister that it was a tradition in the past (…) I thought it would be fun,” Heringer said.
Heringer articulated a creative sign using Lujan’s favorite sports and hobbies: mounting biking and cars.
She created a poster using different pieces of poster board and markers. “I really like making things (…) and I’m a perfectionist so it took longer than I thought it would,” Heringer said.
After finishing the two hour long project, her sister helped Heringer set up the sign.
She surprised the unsuspecting Lujan, and along with the sign she gave him his favorite candy.
Adding the touch of candy was something that Lujan did for Heringer when he invited her to the Homecoming dance, “it made me feel really special and I wanted to do the same for him,” Heringer said.
Lujan appreciated the thought and, “I was really surprised that she made a poster, she did a great job,” Lujan said.
The two are both looking forward to returning to a sense of, “normalancy especially in a time where a lot of things are opening back up,” Lujan said.
“It’s nice to have normal and fun highschool things to look forward to,” Heringer said.
Fitzpatrick encourages proposal submissions to the @davishighevents instagram account. For students to reference, the account has posted a proposal example.
