Throughout the 2021-2022 season, the Davis High women’s swim team has thrived, beating the competition in every meet so far.
They have recently won their final home meet on April 6 against Franklin High with a 129-31 win.
The women’s swim team coach, John Varley, has been satisfied with how his team has done so far with a strong winning streak.
“The season has gone really well so far. We are undefeated 6-0 with an invitational meet coming up this weekend and league champs next weekend,” Varley said.
Varley has been confident due to previous wins and is looking forward to the postseason.
“We have a really good shot at winning our 22nd section title and placing really well at the state meet,” Varley said.
Audrey Portello, a swimmer on the team, has thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the past few seasons. As a senior on the team, she will be continuing her passion of swimming after highschool.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to swim for Duke University beginning next year. Swimming in college has always been a goal of mine, and I think it will be a rewarding experience,” Portello said.
Portello recognizes senior night as her most memorable experience with DHS swim.
“During a break in our last home meet, the senior swimmers are called up and are recognized in front of the entire team, family and friends. This year we got cute goodie bags made by our team captains,” Portello said.
Another senior on the team, Alex Barth, will also be continuing this sport beyond highschool.
“I will be on the synchronized swimming team at University of Arizona,” Barth said.
Barth decided on UofA for multiple reasons, but mainly because few schools have competitive synchronized swimming programs.
“I’m excited because I didn’t think I was going to do synchro in college because a lot of colleges don’t have a synchro team. I have been doing synchro for 13 years so stopping now would have been sad,” Barth said.
Practices are held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in addition to weekly meets.
With this tight schedule, Barth mentions how she balances school with practices and meets.
“Well it definitely wasn’t easy so I tried to get most of my work done in class,” Barth said.
The swim team’s next meet will be the NorCal Championships on April 8 and 9.
