The quest to find a compatible roommate as an incoming college freshman can be daunting, especially if a student doesn’t know anyone going to their university. Some find their roommates by meeting people online, and others choose to simply fill out their university’s roommate compatibility questionnaire and let the algorithm make the choice for them. But some Davis High students have decided to stick together in their college years by rooming together.
Seniors Paige Telles and Greta Farnum will be sharing a room at UC Berkeley next fall. Telles said that she decided to attend Berkeley due to its school spirit and lower cost of tuition compared with private and out-of-state schools.
She and Farnum became good friends during the spring school musical.
“I just felt like Greta and I were a great fit, we are both looking for the same things in a roommate and have similar interests so it just felt perfect,” Telles said. “I also would rather not have to try to meet some rando on the internet and just pray for the best.”
Telles said that rooming with someone from her high school makes college seem less intimidating.
“It’s such a comfort knowing we are stepping into this new chapter together,” Telles said.
Seniors Alyssa Dolcini and Alex Barth will be rooming together at the University of Arizona.
“The school seems to have a fun and uplifting environment and it also has opportunities for both of our sports,” Dolcini said.
Like Telles, Dolcini feels that living with someone she already knows during her first year of college is comforting.
“It’s convenient. It’s easier to move to another state with someone you already know. 100 percent less intimidating,” Dolcini said.
Seniors Max Plauterman, Eli Ziser, and Dario Cavalier will be rooming together at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
“(Cal Poly is) on the beach, affordable, and has a good reputation,” Plauterman said.
He met Ziser through their mutual friend Dylan, and then met Cavalier through Ziser. He said that it was a coincidence that they all ended up choosing the same college, and decided to room together afterwards.
Like Telles and Dolcini, Plauterman agreed that knowing that he will be sharing a room with people who he already knows makes the transition from high school to college life seem less overwhelming.
