Every year, Davis High says goodbye to the seniors and welcomes a new batch of sophomores to campus. Sophomores often become lost and overwhelmed by their unfamiliar surroundings.
Junior Jerry Zhang recalled his first day at DHS, and how he felt disoriented at a brand new school. “I was all over the place, because I had just moved to Davis and I literally didn’t know anyone,” Zhang said.
A good way to feel more at home is to socialize with the other students in class right away. Zhang was quick to make friends on his first day. “I went up to (my classmate) Sean and asked him if I could sit with him and his friends.” Zhang said.
Establishing lunch spots is a great way for students to establish a meeting place with friends. “He told me to go to a place near the N wing, and yeah, we had a nice lunch.” Zhang said.
Zhang also had trouble navigating campus to find his classes. “I had a hard time finding fifth period because it was up the stairs, but I asked Coach Tim, who was there to help students get to their classes.” Zhang said. Staff members at DHS are always happy to help new students find their way around.
Junior Christian Rosas had trouble adjusting to school after the end of summer. “I was a little nervous. I had to see what classes I was in, I wasn’t really mentally present in my classes until a month into the year,” Rosas said.
Many teachers like to ease into the brand new school year on the first week, and go over basic classroom expectations, as well as avoiding large assignments right away. “All classes on the first day, we just went over things like the syllabus.” Zhang said. This gives students the chance to get back into the swing of things and gear up for another school year.
