The school board approved Bryce Geigle, 34, as Davis High’s next principal on Thursday, June 2.
Geigle previously served as the principal at Aspire Langston Hughes Academy, a public charter school in Stockton. The school is significantly smaller than DHS, serving 760 students from grades 6 through 12. The racial demographic is also drastically different, as the school population is 61% Latino and 19% African American, compared to DHS’s 24% and 3%.
Geigle doesn’t think these major differences between the schools will serve as a challenge. If anything, he will bring a unique perspective. “Kids are kids,” Geigle said, “Young people are striving to get their voices heard throughout their educational experiences and that’s no different here at Davis High.”
“Overall, I just believe in the power of education and how it can transform one’s trajectories,” he said.
Geigle describes himself as a “nerdy English teacher at heart.” His three young children are named Harper, Beckett, and Fitzgerald. “Pop quiz to anyone if they can name the authors,” he said.
When he is not at school, Geigle spends most of his free time with his family, visiting various California tourist sites on the weekends. In addition, Geigle loves “the usual hiking, running, swimming.”
As a former swim and football coach, he also loves sports. “I’m going to be in the stands rooting for Davis High football this fall,” he said.
“I love the vibe – the Davis spirit – already,” Geigle said. “I honestly look forward to just learning about Davis, the high school itself, and the storied tradition it brings to the town.”
Whether Geigle and his family will move to Davis remains to be seen. “That’s the question of the hour,” he said.
Geigle believes that “presence and availability (at school are) paramount to the principal role. … It’s a lot of learning about student interests and what (they) care about that’s really going to help steward that future for Davis.”
He says that it really comes down to “just talking to kids during lunch time.” He plans to ask how their classes are going, what they’re doing outside of school, and “just be that overall listening ear to our young people.”
When asked how he thought students would describe his vibe, Geigle explained that he sees himself as old school, specifically in his approach to discipline. “I’m warm, I have a lot of energy, but I’m like ‘we got to be on our game as students of DHS,” he said.
Geigle is looking forward to connecting with teachers as well and figuring out how to best support them in the classroom. He believes that all staff are there to advocate for the students.
He also plans on getting to know parents from the community through involvement with the PTA, one on one meetings when necessary and even “just an informal wave as (they) are dropping off in the parking lot.”
Geigle is excited for the coming year. “I’m energized,” he said. “I’m pumped to be here … the synergy around campus is palpable.”
He encourages students to follow him on instagram @dr.geigle_dshsprincipal to get the principal’s perspective of DHS life.
