Davis High posted a win against the Yuba City Honkers on Aug. 31. The Blue Devils won all three sets with respective scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-9. This performance secured the team a win/loss record of 5-1, giving them the second-best record in the Delta League prior to the start of conference matches.
“I think we played pretty well. In the beginning we struggled a little bit but then we came out really strong at the end and I think we worked really well as a team,” senior Michelle Kang said.
“I think we did really well, especially at the front row, like we had some really good blocks tonight,” senior Olivia Kim said.
“We also had really good defense tonight. The back row was super scrappy and they were getting everything up and they were reading the ball really well,” Kang said.
Going into the game, Davis expected to win but they were caught off guard by the fight the Honkers put up in the beginning.
“I think we underestimated them,” Kim said.
During the first two sets, the competition was tight and the two teams traded scoring streaks back and forth. At the ends of those sets, the Devils pulled away and earned the victory.
The third set was where the Blue Devils truly shined. The chemistry on the court was electric and Davis quickly asserted its dominance by getting off to an early and large lead.
“It’s good that even though we have a wide age range… we get along,” Kim said.
“When I was a sophomore, all the seniors like didn’t really interact with us, so it’s good that we’re all close this year,” she added.
Even after a strong victory, the team looks for things they can improve on.
“I think we can work on… slamming the door,” explained Kim, “we can finish it without having to go back and forth at the end so much.”
With a great team bond, split second reaction times, as well as a deep and skilled roster, it’s hard not to be excited about the bright future of Blue Devil volleyball.
