The Davis High women’s varsity tennis match that was set for Sept 6. was canceled after excessive heat warnings swept across California.
The team was set to play Cosumnes Oaks High but heat advisories deemed outdoor activities after 10:30 a.m. hazardous.
With the match scheduled to take place at 3:45 p.m., it was a necessary precaution to cancel the event. “Our coach always puts our safety first so I wasn’t surprised the match was canceled,” junior tennis player Maya Moeller said. The temperature at the set time would have been well over 100 degrees fahrenheit.
The tennis team has yet to have the first match of the season. “I was looking forward to this match … our last match on Thursday got canceled due to the heat as well,” senior Macey Foncannon said.
Although disappointed Foncannon was able to see a positive, “not having to play in the extreme heat is definitely a plus.”
The teams third scheduled match, set for Sept. 8 against Pleasant Grove, was also canceled because of the heat, making a total of three games canceled.
Looking forward, the team has a BYE on Sept. 13, making the first match of the season set for Sept. 15 against Franklin High.
