The Homecoming parade provides each grade and club a chance to build a float, as a team, which results in lots of challenges and many triumphs.
Davis High sophomores, Sahda Bhinder and Vidya Merchant were the leaders of this year´s sophomore class float. Bhinder expressed one of the big challenges was simply getting a trailer to put the float on.
“We had a trailer, but it fell through. This meant we not only had to find another one, but we also had to go back and get everything approved again,” Bhinder said.
Decisions and purchases regarding the float are approved by all students who help in the building process. On top of that, they must get a signature from their advisors, to ensure all money is being spent responsibly.
Homecoming is much earlier this year than it has been in previous years. This has caused another big challenge; Merchant described it as a “mad dash” for the organizers to get everything done in time. “Until the day school started, we didn’t realize how close the parade really was,” Merchant said.
Despite these challenges, Merchant believes this was an overall good experience and has taught her quite a lot. “I’ve definitely gotten way better at communicating with large groups and I’ve been able to learn to use different types of media for advertising,” Merchant said.
