Resilience. Talent. Passion. This is what the class of 2023 is made of.

From the start of high school, their paths were full of bumpy obstacles and hurdles. “They endured a lot in the start of their high school journey,” Davis High principal Bryce Geigle said.

Freshman year, what was supposed to be a prolonged spring break, ended up being a quarantined lockdown nationwide. Sophomore year, it was announced that school would be online. Any class or club that the seniors wanted to participate in was also held through Zoom at the time.

Half of their high school lives were taken away due to the pandemic, and just last year were the seniors able to return back fully on campus for classes.

“I felt like the pandemic shortened high school (for me), it was really only like a year,” graduating senior Nika King said.

Besides having time taken away, the seniors also struggled to get back into the routine of being a high schooler. The clubs and other activities that were held online were something done in-person once again.

However, this wasn’t always the case, especially with worries of covid still being a problem. “I wanted to try out a sport in high school, but I just didn’t feel safe enough to be around people during covid,” graduating senior Maria Wroblewska said. “When it became better, it was already too late to join.”

There were many missed opportunities and chances to try out new things.

Despite the struggles of getting back to the normal routine, the seniors also enjoyed showing their Blue Devil pride… or their differences.

“This class of 2023 is so diverse because everyone’s completely different from nationality to personality,” graduating senior Taylor Schlenvogt said.

“Everyone’s sociable and exciting to be with; no one’s afraid of being themselves,” graduating senior Juan Ghammashi.

“My time at DHS was (like) a party, I had a good time with good people,” graduating senior Maia Romero said.

Even though there may have been differences between the seniors, all reflected back on their high school experience and all agreed on one thing: “they (the class of 2023) helped build back the school spirit (that we wanted) and pushed our school to think around inclusive structures and systems and relationships,” Geigle said.

“The class of 2023 really supported… their peers, teachers, and admin team; I have my deepest gratitude for them,” Geigle said.

Thank you, seniors; goodbye high school, hello to a new journey ahead.
