The holidays are fast approaching, and as cheer and goodwill travels, Davis High students clear their schedules and make their vacation plans.
Thanksgiving break is the closest vacation in sight, taking place from Nov. 20-24. Junior Noam Rose has been planning a backpacking trip with his friends for weeks. Rose, an avid backpacker, is excited for the time off.
“I’m really hyped to get back out there. We get (such) little time off of school that this is one of the only times you can schedule a multi-day trip,” Rose said.
However, the destination is still up in the air for Rose and his friends. That’s because of how quickly the weather changes during the winter, something that Rose has to plan for.
“I was going to go (to) Plumas National Forest or El Dorado National Forest, but that could change depending on how cold it is and if it snows. If that ends up being the case, I’d probably go backpacking or camping on the coast or maybe further north, somewhere around Clearlake or Point Reyes,” Rose said.
Other students have different plans for Thanksgiving. Many students visit family in different parts of the country, while some stay local. Junior Kaleb Gee will be visiting his grandparents in Sacramento.
“I’ll be in Davis for the whole break, and then visit my grandparents on Thanksgiving Day. Then I have a basketball tournament in San Francisco the next day. It’ll definitely be a long couple of days,” Gee said.
The winter sports season is starting to ramp up, preventing lots of students in sports from vacationing during Thanksgiving break. Gee has practice every day, forcing him to stay local throughout the holidays.
“It’s tough being in a competitive sport, because we have to practice every day, so I can’t leave Davis (during the break),” Gee said.
Whether it’s backpacking through the wilderness or visiting family before a big tournament, students at DHS are ready for the holidays to hit.
“I can’t wait for break, I’m so excited to not have to worry about school and just have fun,” Gee said.
Students have to balance their extracurriculars and hobbies with travel plans during the break. Sophomore Raina Morshed has to plan accordingly when it comes to vacationing. Morshed volunteers at local theaters in Davis, making it difficult to plan for vacations.
“My family usually has to plan in advance (for Thanksgiving break) but we still might have to cancel (because) I may have a show during that time and not be able to go with my family,” Morshed said.
Morshed’s family has to plan far in advance for vacations. This is especially true when a vacation plan has multiple moving parts. This Thanksgiving break, Morshed’s family has to plan for a 3-4 day trip that takes them throughout California.
“We tend to range (during Thanksgiving break) between Davis, Modesto, (and LA). For example, we’ll be in Modesto for a day and then the next would be in Davis, or I’ll be visiting my sister in LA. We (will) leave for LA on Monday and then spend the night, and drive to Modesto the next day and then back to Davis,” Morshed said.
