Davis High’s women’s basketball had a strong offensive game against Franklin, winning 64-15 in the roaring north gym on Jan. 31st.
On Break the Record Night, students dressed in white piled in to support the Devils to face Sheldon once again after successfully beating them 54-28 previously.
Within seconds of the game starting Izzy Cherry made a layup to put Davis on the board first. Followed closely by Alia Cordone who makes three buckets, including one three-ball.
The Devils did not stay on defense for long, having ten steals in the first quarter, with Tessa Schouten having six of her own.
“We got off to a great start defensively, being able to force turnovers and convert easy buckets out of that,” DHS head coach Heather Highshoe said.
Drawing on this momentum it puts the Devils at an early advantage, scoring 19 points in the first quarter putting them up 19-7.
Passing with ease, Davis was able to keep putting up as many shots as they could. “We had really good ball movement, we moved it fast around the court,” Schouten said. “It came naturally to us to pass it around and get the best look,” Cordone said.
Clearing the court at halftime the Devils led 38-11, stepping up their defensive game.
Celebrating the Break the Record Night, Student Government ran games for the students to show off their Blue Devil pride, competing in a tense match of modified tic tac toe filled the crowd with spirit.
Going into the third quarter, Davis worked hard to tighten up their defense and shut Sheldon down.
Chaya Chiu dribbled the ball down the court and evaded her defenders, passing it over to Vidya Merchant who put up an easy layup.
Tightening up their defense, Davis allowed Sheldon only to score one point the whole quarter, and Davis extended their lead to 42 points.
Cordone led Davis throughout the game, she scored another two points at the end of the game, scoring a total of 21 points. “It was fun to watch her have a game like she had tonight,” Highshoe said.
Alongside Cordone, Schouten and Jiana Trotman were the top scorers and paved the path to victory. Beating the Huskies, the Blue Devils won 64-15 moving them up in league.
The top four teams in the league advance to the playoffs, and with only three more games, Davis stands in third.
“We are really close up in the league and there’s competitive teams so we really needed this win to get the momentum going,” Cordone said.
Preparing for their away game on Friday, Feb. 2nd against Franklin, with a record of 7-2 in the league and 16-10, overall they are seeded second. Davis has a “one game at a time approach” Highshoe said. “We need to continue to value every possession we have offensively.”
