The Blue Devils varsity baseball team kept their heads held high despite a crushing end score of 1-16 against the Jesuit Marauders, with a mercy calling after the 5th inning.
With this defeat, the Blue Devils dropped their overall record to 3-7, and league standings 3-3. This year, all three of Davis’ losses were against Jesuit, whereas last season, Davis swept them 3-0.
“This is just one of those games where you want to forget and have a short memory,” DHS head coach Ethan Guevin said. “(Next time) we’ll come back out and play better, and flush this one.”
The first inning ended in a 0-0 score, with junior Dylan Beamish pitching well, striking out the first three batters at the plate.
The top of the second inning felt like an eternity for the Devils, unable to get out of defense. With the score gap widening, Guevin rotated pitchers from junior Dylan Beamish, to junior Charlie Sheridan, to senior Reyan Islam. They ended their turn on the field 8-0.
“We weren’t putting hitters away,” Guevin said.
In the following 2 Innings the top of the 5th, Jesuit extended their lead to a daunting 16-0. During Davis’ chance to bat at the end of the fifth inning, senior Oskar O’Geen put his team on the board with single and sent to home base by junior Noah Schelp, ending off the game with a score of 16-1.
“It felt alright to get on the board but it didn’t mean much,” O’Geen said.
This upcoming week, the Blue Devils get back on the pitch in a tournament with Kerman high school and Frontier high school.
“The mindset going forward is to leave it all on the field,” junior Jackson Moore said. “There’s nothing else we can really do except move forward.”
